With its 8 combat blocks and 5 kilometers of underground galleries, covering 54 hectares, Simserhof is one of the largest artillery fortifications of the Maginot Line. 860 soldiers made up its ranks.
It won renown for its heroic resistance, while, for more than a month, assuring the protection of Bitche's smaller surrounding forts, such as that of Rohrbach-lès-Bitche(Fort Casso).
It lay down its arms under the orders of the French Military High Command, 30 June 1940, after the ceasefire.
